Martin Sprouse Furniture

MAY 08 My secret life as a furniture photographer – I'm sure you didn't know that about me. Highly conceptual, painstakingly designed and manufactured by Martin Sprouse. Have been documenting his work for years and the new website just launched. Go visit and check out some amazing custom work. »

Jonas Hiller Anaheim Ducks

APR 08 Jonas Hiller, Anaheim ducks goalie for Das Magazin in Switzerland. What was supposed to be a straight-up editorial portrait turned into a two day shoot chasing down my subject in Southern California. On the fly it turned into a more journalistic story and luckily the publication gave the images some room. You can read the whole story in my native tongue online, if that doesn't work out for you browse their archives – there's some nice photography up there. A bit like the New York Times magazine without the snobbiness. »

Philip Zimbardo

MAR 08 Philip Zimbardo, author of The Lucifer Effect and creator of the Stanford Prison Experiment. Photographed for The Independent in London. Read the story and see another outtake. »

Chinatown Kids

SEP 07 Taking a break from everything today. Hitting the streets with my camera and shoot like I used to - from the gut - who thought that photography could be fun. »

SEP 07 A few photoblogs I've been enjoying lately, providing a good mix of writing and imagery: Amy Stein, Speak, See, Remember by Christian Patterson, Tim Atherton's muse-ings, i heart photograph, flak photo, b sire.
5b4 does a great job reviewing photo books and has an excellent taste - lots of smaller titles - I'd love to spend a weekend in that library.
For magazine & design junkies like me check out Designing Magazines and magCulture. The Magazine Death Pool will save you a couple stamps before you send your next promo to a folding publication.
No better place to merge great design, typography and photography than book covers. Visit Covers for some great examples (and some failures) with always interesting comments and then head to the Book Design Review.
I love music videos that keep it simple - these two are beautiful, one with bikes, the other on a roller coaster.
Enjoying the wacky and imaginative short stories of Aimee Bender. British journalist Jon Ronson always cracks me up and both his books are great finds in the bargain section.

Thee More Shallows

JUN 07 Only a three piece, but Thee More Shallows sure pack a lot of sounds and instruments into their music. I've always enjoyed their layering of melodies and noise and their latest album Books of Breaks comes highly recommended. Photographed in West Oakland for Resonance, go see them live to find out what's in the red suitcase. »

Aimie for Shanti Project

JUN 07 Often the most rewarding jobs are the ones done for free. There's more room for creativity, less pressure and you're really helping someone out. I did a series of portraits of women with breast cancer for the Shanti project, we had a lot of fun shooting in a tiny office and it was nice to hear how comfortable and special everybody felt. »

Dem Hoodstarz

SEP 06 Photographer Alec Soth keeps a lively blog about photography, art, poetry, inspiration, my favorite cinematographer Robby Müller and paper towels. And if, for whatever reason you haven't seen his work yet you better check out his projects. Speaking of Robby Müller - the summer issue of All-Story has been guest-designed by Wim Wenders and features his photographs and an essay about Butte, Montana which fascinated me the same way even though I only got to spend a few hours there.

Neal Smither

AUG 06 Neal Smither, most energetic entrepreneur and Crime Scene Cleaner, photographed for German magazine Neon. Check out this episode of "This American Life" for his and other excellent stories related to crime scenes. He's also featured in "Gig", a book about Americans and their jobs, which is like a modern version of Studs Turkel's "Working", oral history I love to dig through. And since we're at it, don't forget the ultimate collection of stories of worker's revenge, "Sabotage in the American Workplace" by Martin Sprouse. »

Turf Talk

APR 06 Even NPR is talking about Hyphy and the Vallejo sound these days. Comes with a handy dictionary and for more info check out Davey D's radio show with the Federation or this MTV segment about the Bay. Photographed Turf Talk for XXL magazine and there's a new DJ Shadow track featuring him and Keak Da Sneak. Seems like Bay Area Hip Hop is finally getting its well-deserved attention including my faves Zion I, the Coup, Quannum and Anticon.

MAR 06 Netdiver's looking really good these days providing some fine links - nicely organized by category. I killed a rainy afternoon just digging through the photography section alone.
Can't wait to see the new book of photographs by Jason Fulford - if you're in LA visit the launch party at Skylight Books for his and Mike Slack's new release on April 21st.

JAN 06 3 am Photography gets Web Site of the Day award at TAXI. I love their little description "A very strong resemblance to an independent magazine you'd wished only you've found at a bookstore no one else goes to."
Nice one - not only did they get one of the ideas behind the site but they also relate to my favorite hangout. »

Del Mar California

DEC 05Holga snaps from Del Mar, Cali ...need to jump into warm water again ...so done with winter. »

NOV 05 Redesigned website launches. Some may have noticed over the past few months that I updated and added new sections, but finally everything's come together. There's a big expanded photo section because that's what I've been focusing on lately and images are finally shown at a proper size.
Some of my limited edition gallery prints mounted on aluminum are now available in the store. I redesigned the home page so that it'll be way quicker to add new content - so check back regularly. A giant launch party will take off once the vodka sponsors are secured ...well actually there may just be drinks and turntables in my backyard.

OCT 05 The new issue of Asian-American magazine Hyphen titled "Bodies" is at the newsstands now. I shot a few spreads for the fashion story - showcasing the clothing of local designer Marilyn Yu-Li - which was loosely based around death and crime scenes without being too graphic. We worked around San Francisco on a bone-chilling night. At one point the cops shined a light on me and the lifeless body by the waterfront, but I guess I really don't fit the demographics of a serial killer - nor did I wear my clown costume that night - so they didn't even bother to get out of their cruiser. It got a little surreal on top of Bernal Heights hill where some stoners in the trees provided an eerie soundtrack on their didgeridoo - us surrounded by the misty fog - while some weirdo tried to break with his car through the gate at the bottom of the hill. And I always thought I was the only one up for adventures on a late Monday night. Thanks to everybody in the crew and our model Annelyn Ayran for working so hard and putting up with the elements. We wrapped at 3 am - booya! I'll add a few images to the new additions in the photo section of the site.

OCT 05Some linkage for inspiration. Conscientious is my favorite photoblog, very thoughtful. Chuck Klosterman's Sex, Drugs, and Cocoa Puffs book is pretty hilarious and a good, quick airplane read. Slow Man by J. M. Coetzee revives my visions of crashing on my bike and whenever I'll go down I'll be thinking of something absurdly funny.
My Life Without Me was a surprisingly great movie. The story line sounds brutally depressing but I found it very inspiring and uplifting.
Finally got to see Minus The Bear play live - their latest album Menos El Oso makes me happy and wanna hit the road again - shortens the wait for a new No Knife record. Carissa's Wierd still make the most beautiful sad music, there's a live in-studio performance online at KEXP. I hope they'll reform and also check out Jenn Ghetto's solo bedroom recordings under the moniker S.
Saul Williams and Dead Prez make me shake my booty and read lyrics again. Loud guitars from Criteria, check out the Swervedriver anthology. Great collages of samples arranged by Norwegian artist Kim Hiorthøy, saw a great performance by Mugison at the Icelandic film festival who sews his own CD covers. Hood have some remixes and other downloads on their site. East Bay's anticon collaborates with Germany's Notwist on 13 & God. Experimental and genre-mixing: Thavius Beck and Daedelus. Keeping your ears warm - Headset and Headphones (video).
Always a sucka for female vocals, even if it's total pop: Imogen Heap, Róisín Murphy goes solo after Moloko, Laura Veirs, Metric, Emiliana Torrini who sings Why on the Gus Gus album, Juana Molina from Argentina.
Best coffee in San Francisco at Ritual, who roast their own. Favorite summer cocktail at Dalva made with Maker's Mark, freshly crushed mint, orange & lime, perfect now that summer's finally here.

San Francisco Cyclery

SEP 05The sign I designed for San Francisco Cyclery finally went up at their store at 672 Stanyan. It's a great bike shop right around the corner from Amoeba Music on Haight St. and run by the nicest and most knowledgeable people. Check them out some time - true wheels - true hearts.

Lagwagon Resolve

AUG 05 For their latest release "Resolve" Lagwagon went through my photo archives and picked sixteen images for the packaging of their new CD & LP. Beautifully texturized and slapped together by Sergie Loobkoff. It includes a bunch of my older black & white work. Out now on Fat Wreck Chords and available at record stores - remember those?

Daniel Clowes

JUL 05 Photographed Daniel Clowes, creator of Eightball and Ghost World for an upcoming cover story in Resonance Magazine. Besides a meticulously organized office he had an interesting assortment of art on the wall and I was a little disappointed I only had 45 minutes to explore.

MAY 05 Expanded redesign of photographer Maren Caruso's website launches. Flash programming by Ordinary Kids who have a some nice work up on their new site.

APR 05 Smoke Or Fire from Richmond, VA - formerly known as Jericho - release their new album Above The City. I photographed and designed the packaging for them. Chased around the city for some panoramic views - check it out in the Design section.

Tom Waits Blood Money

MAY 02
Tom Waits releases a new album called Blood Money on indy Anti. Designed the whole package and it was nice to be involved with a project of an artist whose work I've admired since I was a teenager. Should've saved some of those long, rambling messages but most of the time I thought it was my friends crank calling me. Check out some early cover mock-ups. All photography by Jesse Dylan.

MAY 02 PDN Photo Annual '02 awards 3 am website.

SEP 01 3am website, version 1, featured in Portfolios Online book.
